It was fun to follow along with her on this tropical adventure.~I lived in Hawaii (different islands) and I appreciated how the author brought some of the local color and atmosphere into his story.
~I liked the plot twists. Without any spoilers, trying to follow who’s got a bag and which bag they really have was quite entertaining.
~I would recommend this book!

Good book
This is a funny romp of a book.
Set in Hawaii, the plot revolves around a jewel heist...actually a defrauding...in which the jewels go missing. A bunch of weird people board a plan with backpacks like the one the jewels are hidden in. When the plane nearly crashes, each one grabs the nearest backpack in the rush to get off.
The heroine is a private detective hired to find the jewels. Best I can figure, she's a cross-dresser with a genetic problem that allows her to talk like a man. This comes in handy when she skulks around looking for backpacks.
Throw in a couple of crooked brothers who hate each other, a sleazy jeweler putting stolen jewels in his original designs, some career criminals looking for an easy buck, and a college student just wanting his...
Well, I won't tell the whole story. If you've ever seen the film It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, you'll recognize the scenario. And if you like a mystery that's heavy on action and misconstruction with a dash of comedy thrown in, you'll like this book.
I thought there were too many characters at the beginning to keep straight and took me about half way through the book before I started remembering all the characters and how they relate to one another. Plane crash and switching backpacks was difficult to buy. Reviews say the second book is better. I'll give that a try. If it's not, I'll move along to another author.
Have read two other authors, Joanne Bassett and Jill Marie Landes and enjoyed them much more!!!!!! Better plots and more humor and fun. Both authors use Hawaii as the setting. I bought the first two of this series and won't be buying anymore.
The book drags along. I finally gave up although I did enjoy the accurate descriptions of Kona. The characters were interesting, the Hilo detective especially. The criminals were just too dumb for words. Paradise does have few hardened criminals, and maybe that was the authors intent. A little more evil intent could have made the story more believable. I admit that I gave up trying to figure out where the jewels had gone at any given moment. The premise was interesting about the bags mix up at the beginning, and it could have been fun to follow. There are so few good Hawaiian stories out there that I keep looking.Those of us who love Hawaii but can't live there would appreciate many more good ones. Maybe this story could come back reworked at some point. It has some good potential.
If Carl Hiaasen moved to Hawaii and focused on organize crime rather than environmental misdeeds then you would get “The Kona Shuffle”. A mix of bumbling criminals, strange situations and the always exotic Hawaii, brings together a fun story of thievery and double cross. The characters are fun, if a bit static and the story blends together a nice mix of mystery and action to be really enjoyable. If you’re looking for a tropical misadventure in your mind pick this one up!
I absolutely LOVED this book....and the next two that followed! This book kept me laughing and wondering how it would end, so many twists and turns. I've read them several times over and I still laugh at the things these two girls run into as PI's! Book two is my favorite so far,so I'm waiting to see book four come out some time in Oct. 2017. If you enjoy mystery and comedy, these are the books for you!
